Public-sector and research jobs in Italy: where the listings actually are

Updated: October 2026

If you are after a job in the Italian public administration, a research fellowship or a university researcher post, general job boards are close to useless: these openings live on separate institutional portals, each with its own search engine. They are also the hardest listings to reach through an ordinary Google search — not because they are hidden, but for very concrete technical reasons. Below are the sources, verified one by one, and more importantly the traps: they are the same ones our own agent hits when it searches for a user.

The official portals

Two addresses cover the large majority of Italian public listings, and both are worth knowing because they do not overlap: one is the public administration at large, the other is the university and research world.

  • inPA (inpa.gov.it) — the recruitment portal of the Italian public administration, which describes itself as a system to «improve the quality of recruitment in the Public administration». Individual listing pages (/bandi-e-avvisi/dettaglio-bando-avviso/?concorso_id=…) are public, dated and indexed: you can read them without registering.
  • bandi.mur.gov.it — the Ministry portal for university and research-body openings: fixed-term researchers, research fellowships (assegni di ricerca), post-doc appointments and professorship calls. Academic posts end up here, not on inPA.
  • The hiring body's own website, under Amministrazione trasparente → Bandi di concorso. Research institutes (ISPRA, INGV, CNR) and universities publish the full text of the call there, often more completely than any aggregator.

Reading listings on inPA requires nothing. Applying does: per the portal's own FAQ, registering for a personal area uses SPID, CIE, CNS or eIDAS. Get the digital identity before you find the call you want, not after — competition deadlines are strict and do not reopen.

MUR is not one portal: it is four

This is the detail that costs academic job seekers the most time. bandi.mur.gov.it has no single search engine: it has separate sections, each with its own address and its own form. Search the wrong section and you do not get «no results» — you get the results of something else.

  • jobs.php — calls for fixed-term researchers.
  • bandi.php (cercaFellowship) — calls for research fellowships.
  • incarichipostdoc.php — post-doc appointments, often published in English too.
  • profcalls.php — professorship calls, first and second band.

Each section also has per-listing detail pages, recognisable by the ID in the address (/id_job/…, /id_fellow/…). Those are the ones to bookmark and share, not the search-form addresses — the first trap below explains why.

Why search engines miss these listings

Four technical causes, all verified directly. Knowing them changes how you search.

  • Result pages are empty to anything that is not a browser. Search-form addresses (for example cercaJobs?…) are indexed, but the list of calls loads after the page opens and is not in the page text. In one of our searches a page that announced 27 calls arrived with zero readable calls. Always open the individual listing's detail page.
  • The disciplinary-sector code silently decides everything. The MUR form filters by G.S.D. and the code travels in the address (idgsd24=…). With the wrong code you get no error — you get another discipline's calls. It happened to us: a geosciences search carrying the code 06/MEDS-08 returned 61 calls, all medical (nephrology, endocrinology, dentistry). Check the selected sector in the dropdown before you read the results.
  • The real call is often an attached PDF. Universities publish heavily in PDF: Google indexes the title, but the contents stay out of reach for most automated search tooling. The title promises and the text cannot be verified, so download the PDF and read it before deciding a call fits you.
  • Many pages show only «similar listings». Index sections of the open competitions kind, and aggregator category pages, frequently return just a heading and a list of links with no listing text at all. They are not listings: they are summaries.

Private aggregators: good for discovery, not for deciding

Alongside the official portals sit private sites that collect competitions and organise them by qualification, hiring body and region. They are handy for seeing what is moving, but use them as an index, not as a source.

  • concorsipubblici.com — well indexed, with pages by qualification and by hiring body plus a count of open calls (for example «Competitions at Ministries: 11 open calls»). Good for exploring.
  • informazioneconcorsi.it and similar — same role: they republish bodies' calls and make them findable with an ordinary search.

One rule, and it is not negotiable: deadline, requirements and required qualification are read on the official call. Aggregators summarise, sometimes late, and a badly summarised requirement costs you the application. Use them to find the call, then open the source.

How to set up the search

  • Search the portals directly with the site: operator: site:inpa.gov.it and site:bandi.mur.gov.it followed by the profile you want. They return individual listings' detail pages, with dates — exactly what you need.
  • Use the vocabulary of public calls, not of job ads: assegno di ricerca, ricercatore a tempo determinato, borsa di studio, istruttore direttivo, funzionario, collaboratore tecnico, per soli esami. Those are the words that appear in the titles.
  • Pair English titles with Italian ones: post-doc appointments and many research calls are published in English («post doc», «research fellow») by Italian universities too.
  • Two terms wreck queries in Italian. «AI» on its own collides with the Italian preposition ai («to the»): write intelligenza artificiale or machine learning instead. «LLM» collides with Master of Laws: write large language model.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between inPA and bandi.mur.gov.it?

inPA is the recruitment portal for the Italian public administration in general: local authorities, ministries, health trusts, technical and administrative roles. bandi.mur.gov.it is the Ministry portal for universities and research bodies: fixed-term researchers, research fellowships, post-doc appointments, professorship calls. For an academic post start at MUR; for a public-administration job start at inPA. Many bodies also publish the full text on their own site, under Amministrazione trasparente.

Why does a search on the MUR portal return calls from another discipline?

Because the disciplinary-sector (G.S.D.) filter travels in the address as a code, and with the wrong code the portal flags nothing: it simply shows another sector's calls. In our own check the code 06/MEDS-08 returned 61 medical calls to a search meant for geosciences. Reopen the sector dropdown and check what is selected before concluding there is nothing for you.

Do I need SPID for Italian public-sector competitions?

To read the calls, no: inPA's detail pages are public. To apply, yes, you need a digital identity — inPA's FAQ lists SPID, CIE, CNS and eIDAS for personal-area access. Activate it in advance, because call deadlines are strict.

Can I get new calls by email instead of checking the portals every day?

That is exactly the problem Knowledge Gatherer exists for. Our agent searches every evening, 7 days a week, across the sources that matter for your profile, public-call portals included, scores what it finds and emails you only the single best result, with the score and the reasoning. It does not fill applications in for you: public competitions have forms, attachments and deadlines you must handle yourself. It exists so you do not miss the right call.
